Text Photos Critique

Felicia Critiquing Jamie

1. The first photo "Reach for the sky" uses an extreme altered point of view. It looks like she is up in the air at the cloud's level and there just happens to be power lines that are floating up there. The picture seems really well exposed and the light colored sky provides the perfect backdrop for the black power lines and silhouetted tennis shoes. The text she chose fits in perfectly with the photo and making it the same color as the clouds adds to the sense of peace that is felt in this photo. It also makes the text less of a distraction and help it seem like it's one with the original photo, like it belongs there. Although there's not much action going on in this photo, the elements that are in the photo are more striking because of this.

2. The second photo has an inspiring metaphorical quote about a tree placed in front of a photo of a tree. The tree takes up most of the space of the photo and is the main subject matter. The white background around the middle of the photo seems a little bit washed out to me, but it might just be the way the clouds were. I like how the photo is divided into thirds by color blocks of green, white, and blue. I only wish there was as much green under the tree as there is blue on top of it. Maybe by just stepping back a little bit to get more of the grass or angling the camera down a bit so that the tree's distance from the edge was equal on both the top and the bottom would have helped. I love how the quote ties into what's in the picture, I just wish i could see it better. The black font fades away into the shadows of the tree trunk and the darker grass. Maybe using a lighter font color or placing it somewhere with less shadows would make it easier to read.

3. The text in the 4th photo  (the one with the ring on the flower) is very subtle. You can barely see the date printed on the inside of the ring. It almost looks like it's actually engraved on the inside. The monochromatic greens in the background push the bright reds of the flower forward in the picture plane and the large aperture blurs out all their detail, making it even easier for us to focus on the main subject matter. I like how the flower is reaching out to all sides of the photo and is cut off on the edges. It makes the flower seem more like a stage for the ring rather than being the only thing that's important. The only thing I would maybe change is angling the text just a tinyyy bit more so that it follows the curve of the ring a little bit better.

Loved the photos and the way the text was used subtly and fit in with the photos and was not just plastered on top in a way that didn't make sense.

Great job Jamie!! :) :)
